Nicaragua: Protecting Indigenous Communities & Unique Biodiversity

The Bosawás Biosphere Reserve is home to one of the world’s largest primary rainforests and one of Central America’s last remaining areas of undisturbed ecosystems. This area is rich in extreme biodiversity and home to many indigenous groups who want to preserve their culture and land.

The work we support in Nicaragua is helping to restore the land of indigenous communities whose livelihoods have been threatened by deforestation for decades. Mining, poaching and rampant illegal logging are just some of the threats the Nicaraguan communities & their forests face every day. The projects we support work to counteract and protect from the effects of such threats.

The tropical humid tree species we plant in this area work to replenish and enrich the endangered land, while securing the future of the indigenous people and regenerating the habitats of local wildlife. These agroforestry projects provide communities with sustainable economic opportunities to restore and protect large forest areas of threatened land, while empowering them with fair wages and providing them with food security.

So this project is:

  • Protecting against soil erosion

  • Securing water reserves and maintaining water quality

  • Providing economic opportunities to local communities

  • Helping to counteract the effects of mining, poaching & illegal logging

  • Restoring & protecting the habitats of local wildlife
